What is Male Factor Infertility?

Male factor infertility refers to fertility issues that arise from problems with the male reproductive system, including sperm production, quality, or delivery. It is estimated that male factor infertility contributes to approximately 1/3 of all infertility cases with female factors contributing another 1/3 and unexplained infertility comprising the final 1/3. While it is a common condition, it can be emotionally challenging for couples who are trying to conceive.

Causes of Male Factor Infertility:

  • Low Sperm Count (Oligospermia) or no sperm (Azoospermia): A low sperm count can significantly reduce the chances of fertilization. Several factors can contribute to this condition, including hormonal imbalances, genetic abnormalities, testicular damage, or certain medical treatments.
  • Poor Sperm Motility (Asthenospermia): Sperm motility refers to the ability of sperm to move and swim effectively. If sperm have poor motility, they may struggle to reach and fertilize the egg. Causes of asthenospermia can include genetic factors, infections, or environmental factors.
  • Abnormal Sperm Morphology (Teratospermia): Sperm morphology refers to the shape and structure of sperm. Abnormalities in sperm morphology can hinder their ability to penetrate and fertilize the egg. Various factors can contribute to teratospermia, such as genetic factors, infections, or lifestyle choices.
  • Erectile Dysfunction: Difficulties in achieving or maintaining an erection can impact fertility. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a range of factors, including underlying health conditions, hormonal imbalances, or psychological factors.

Diagnosis of Male Factor Infertility:

At ALMU, we offer a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of male factor infertility. The diagnostic process may include:

  • Semen Analysis: A comprehensive analysis of the semen sample is conducted to assess sperm count, motility, morphology, and other parameters.
  • Hormone Testing: Blood tests may be performed to evaluate hormone levels, including testosterone and other reproductive hormones, which can help identify hormonal imbalances.
  • Imaging Studies: Ultrasound or other imaging techniques can provide a visual assessment of the reproductive organs to detect any structural abnormalities or blockages.
  • Genetic Testing: In some cases, genetic testing may be recommended to identify any underlying genetic conditions that could contribute to male factor infertility.

Treatment of Male Factor Infertility:

We work with female reproductive endocrinologists to help you and your partner have the best chance at conception. We take a holistic approach and discuss treatments including:

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Certain lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, eliminating marijuana, and managing stress, can positively impact fertility.
  • Medications: Depending on the underlying cause of infertility, medications may be prescribed to address hormonal imbalances, improve sperm production, or enhance sperm function.
  • Assisted Reproductive Techniques: In more severe cases of male factor infertility, assisted reproductive techniques like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be recommended. These techniques involve the collection and preparation of sperm for direct fertilization of the egg.
  • Surgical Interventions: Surgical procedures can correct structural abnormalities, blockages, or varicoceles (enlarged veins in the scrotum) that may be contributing to male factor infertility. We also perform microTESE, TESE, and TESA to harvest sperm for use in IVF.

If you or your partner are experiencing difficulties conceiving, we encourage you to schedule a consultation. Our team will conduct a comprehensive evaluation, discuss treatment options, and develop a personalized plan to address male factor infertility. We are dedicated to helping you achieve your dream of starting a family.
